Fronius Fortis MIG/MAG Welding Machines

Fronius Fortis 270–500

The next-generation manual MIG/MAG welding machine

Welding jobs change from day to day, and so do the processes they need. Fortis is built to keep up: up to 240 optimised characteristics developed for steel construction, and it handles aluminium and stainless steel with ease, especially with the pulsed arc.

Fortis replaces the Fronius TransSteel series. Pick a ready-to-weld package below, or talk to us about Duo, split and water-cooled set-ups.

Simple, clear, customisable

The display is split into three segments, each with a rotary push button beneath it, for the main parameters and two custom ones. Every important setting is on the first menu level, with animations and a status LED to guide you.

The welding parameter wizard recommends the right settings for the next job, which cuts errors, rejects and rework, even on tasks that change all the time.

  • Bluetooth for wireless remotes and the Vizor Connect helmet
  • Optional NFC for user management and locking the machine
  • Keylock and integrated display protection

One concept, every set-up

Every Fortis is a compact system up to 500 A with room in the housing for the optional cooler. Water cooling can be retrofitted on the 320, 400 and 500 at any time, split versions with an external wirefeeder extend your reach, and every version has the same user interface.

Fortis Duo: two wires, one machine

Duo pairs a Fortis 320, 400 or 500 Compact with a second, external wirefeeder (needs a software activation).

  • Two materials or wire diameters ready to go
  • Switch between them from the torch button
  • Less floor space and a lower cost than two machines
  • Ideal for small and medium workshops with changing jobs

Fortis XT: works on almost any supply

XT stands for Extended. The XT versions run on 200 to 600 V mains, so they can be used anywhere in the world.

  • Available from 270 to 500 A
  • Single-phase operation up to 320 A, depending on the mains fuse
  • Full generator compatibility
  • Up to 16% energy saving over the standard version

MIG/MAG, TIG and MMA

Multiprocess is standard on the Fortis 270 and 320 Compact and optional on the 400 and 500 Compact.

MIG/MAG

  • 3 to 500 A
  • Up to 240 characteristics
  • 0.8–1.6 mm wire
  • Steel, stainless, aluminium, metal-cored and flux-cored wires
  • Standard and Pulse Welding Packages

TIG DC

  • 3 to 500 A
  • TIG pulse welding
  • Touchdown ignition
  • TAC tacking function
  • Gas pre-flow and post-flow time

MMA

  • 10 to 500 A
  • HotStart, Anti-stick, arc-force dynamic
  • MMA pulse

  • CEL (cellulose) mode on XT versions

Welding Packages

Standard welds all common materials across the whole power range. Pulse uses the pulsed arc for low spatter on thin to thick sheet. Pulse/Standard gives you both at a set price. Extras include SynchroPulse for aluminium, stitch welding for less distortion, and Pulse/Standard Mix for vertical-up seams up to 40% faster without weaving. Packages and software options can be added later.

Questions about the Fortis

Why choose a Fronius Fortis over another MIG welder?

Fortis is Fronius's new manual MIG/MAG range (270 to 500 A), built to replace the TransSteel. One machine covers MIG/MAG, TIG DC and MMA, has up to 240 welding characteristics and a plain-text display in over 30 languages, and comes with WiFi and Bluetooth as standard. The XT versions run on 200 to 600 V supplies, and the Duo runs two wires from one power source, so most set-ups are covered by a single range.

How does the Fortis compare with ESAB, Kemppi, Lincoln, Miller or Jasic machines?

They're all established brands, and the right choice depends on what you weld. When comparing, look at the duty cycle at 40 °C, the processes included, which supplies the machine runs on, the warranty and who services it locally. For example, the Fortis 320 C delivers 320 A at 40 %, 280 A at 60 % and 240 A at 100 % duty cycle at 40 °C, with a 3-year warranty. Send us the machine you're considering and we'll give you a straight comparison and a Fortis quote.

Which Fortis do I need: 270, 320, 400 or 500?

As a guide, the 270 suits sheet and light fabrication, the 320 is the all-rounder for general fabrication, and the 400 and 500 are for thicker sections and long runs at high current. Choose water-cooled for sustained high-amperage work. Tell us your materials, thicknesses and power supply and we'll recommend the right package.

Can the Fortis weld aluminium and stainless steel?

Yes. Fortis MIG/MAG handles steel, stainless steel, aluminium, metal-cored and flux-cored wires from 0.8 to 1.6 mm. For aluminium and stainless we recommend a Pulse Welding Package, such as the Fortis 270 C Pulse or 320 C Pulse.

What duty cycle does the Fortis have?

The Fortis 320 C gives 320 A at 40 %, 280 A at 60 % and 240 A at 100 % (10-minute cycle at 40 °C). The 270 C XT gives 270 A at 40 %, 250 A at 60 % and 210 A at 100 %. Ask us for the figures for any other model.

How much does a Fronius Fortis cost?

Fortis packages start at £3,887.50 ex VAT (£4,665.00 inc VAT) for the Fronius Fortis 270 C Pulse 415V G Package. Every package on this page shows its current price ex VAT, and we can quote for Split, Duo and water-cooled set-ups.

Is the Fortis cheaper to run?

The Fortis XT versions offer energy savings of up to 16 %, thanks to an improved power factor (Fronius figure).

What warranty comes with the Fortis?

Every Fortis comes with a 3-year Fronius manufacturer's warranty, with no registration needed. It covers material and manufacturing defects in the machine, wirefeeder, cooling unit and trolley; normal wear parts are excluded.

Can the Fortis record welding data or connect to an app?

Yes. WiFi and Bluetooth come as standard, and Fortis works with Fronius WeldCube Air and WeldCube Premium for documenting and analysing welds.

Can one Fortis run two different wires?

Yes. The Fortis Duo (from 320 A) adds a second wirefeeder, so you can run two spools and two torches from one machine, for example steel and stainless, without changing wire.

Can I see a Fortis before I buy, and do you service them?

Yes. Call us on 0141 959 5666 to arrange a demonstration. We also service, repair and calibrate welding equipment, so your Fortis is looked after by the same team that sold it.

Fortis and TransSteel

Is the TransSteel still available?

The TransSteel series will be discontinued at the end of 2026, apart from the TransSteel 2200, which becomes the Fortis 220. Fronius keeps spare parts for discontinued products for 10 years.

Can I use my TransSteel torch, interconnecting hosepack or trolley?

No, TransSteel components are not compatible with Fortis. FSC welding torches work up to Up/Down functionality; Poti, JobMaster and PullMig torches do not.

What has changed from the TransSteel?

Compact 400 and 500 A machines, XT versions in every power category, a plain-text display with the wizard in over 30 languages, multiprocess on the 400/500 Compact, Duo from 320 A, WiFi and Bluetooth as standard, and new wirefeeders, trolleys, remotes and torches.

Can the Fortis run on single phase?

Yes, every Fortis XT can run single-phase up to 320 A, depending on the mains fuse.

Not sure which Fortis you need?

Tell us what you weld, the materials and thicknesses, and your power supply, and we’ll recommend the right Fortis package, torch and accessories. If you’re replacing a TransSteel, give us the model and we’ll match it.
